About Dick Gray
Dick Gray's rise to the majors came with two pieces of history: on April 16, 1958, he hit the first home run in Los Angeles Dodgers history, off Ramón Monzant, then two days later became the first player to homer in a big-league game played in Los Angeles, at the Memorial Coliseum. The right-handed-hitting third baseman signed with Brooklyn in 1949, lost two seasons to Army service during the Korean War -- playing service ball alongside Whitey Herzog -- and broke through after a strong 1957 season at Triple-A St. Paul. On June 15, 1959, the Dodgers traded him to St. Louis for Chuck Essegian and Lloyd Merritt, and he hit .314 down the stretch for the Cardinals. Card #24 pictures him in Cardinals gear, but he barely wore it: on May 28, 1960, St. Louis shipped him to Pittsburgh with Vinegar Bend Mizell in the deal that brought Julián Javier to the Cardinals. Gray closed his four-year career at .239 with 12 home runs, then played in the minors through 1962.
