About Alex Grammas

Alexander Peter Grammas, born in Birmingham, Alabama on April 3, 1926, to Greek immigrant parents, signed with the Chicago White Sox out of Mississippi State in 1949 and worked through Cincinnati's farm system before a December 1953 trade sent him to St. Louis. A sure-handed infielder who drew comparisons to a young Phil Rizzuto, Grammas debuted with the Cardinals on April 13, 1954, and split his ten big-league seasons between St. Louis (1954-56, 1959-62), Cincinnati (1956-58) and the Cubs (1962-63), finishing with a .247 average, 512 hits and a sharp .969 career fielding percentage. His 1960 Topps card catches him as St. Louis's utility infielder, playing shortstop, second and third for a Cardinals club he'd anchor at short in three separate seasons. Grammas went on to a quarter-century coaching career, mostly at Sparky Anderson's third-base box, winning World Series rings with the 1975 Reds and 1984 Tigers, and in 1976 became the first Greek-American to manage a full major-league season, piloting the Milwaukee Brewers.
