1960 Topps #236 Dick Ricketts

About Dick Ricketts
Richard Ricketts was a rare two-sport pro, the No. 1 overall pick of the 1955 NBA draft by the St. Louis Hawks out of Duquesne University, where he was a three-time All-American forward. He signed with the St. Louis Cardinals that same June and spent three winters playing forward for the Hawks and the Rochester/Cincinnati Royals alongside future Hall of Famers Bob Pettit, Clyde Lovellette, and Jack Twyman. After teammate Maurice Stokes suffered a career-ending paralyzing injury in March 1958, Ricketts walked away from basketball to pitch full time. He reached the majors with the Cardinals in June 1959, going 1-6 with a 5.82 ERA in 12 games, his lone win a June 28 effort against Cincinnati. Card #236 is his second and final Topps issue, following his 1959 rookie card, pairing him with St. Louis the year the Cardinals traded him to the Phillies organization. He pitched through 1964, finishing 99-91 in the minors, one of just 13 men to play in both the NBA and MLB.
