About Bob Miller
Bob Miller signed with his hometown St. Louis Cardinals as an 18-year-old "bonus baby" on June 20, 1957, receiving a reported $20,000 bonus that required the club to keep him on the major-league roster immediately; he debuted six days later against the Phillies. Working as a spot starter and long reliever, Miller went 9-9 for St. Louis across parts of four seasons (1957, 1959-61), and his 1960 Topps card is recognized as his rookie card. Selected by the expansion Mets in the 1961 draft, Miller shared a pitching staff with a same-named teammate, Bob G. Miller, leading a confused Casey Stengel to call him "Nelson." Traded to the Dodgers after a rough 1-12 season, he blossomed as a swingman, going 10-8 with a 2.89 ERA in 1963. Miller pitched 17 seasons for ten clubs, winning World Series titles with the 1963 and 1965 Dodgers and the 1971 Pirates. Later a pitching coach, he earned the nickname "The Christian" for absorbing innings on a sore arm — "because he suffers so much."
