About Kent Hadley
Kent Hadley, a 6-foot-2 first baseman out of USC, broke into pro ball with the Detroit Tigers in 1956 after an All-American season under coach Rod Dedeaux. Traded to Kansas City, he led the Southern Association with 34 home runs for Little Rock in 1958 and earned a late-season call-up to the Athletics. On December 11, 1959, Hadley was traded with Roger Maris from Kansas City to the New York Yankees, the deal behind his 1960 Topps #102 card. He spent the season mostly on New York's bench behind Bill Skowron, playing in 55 games and batting .203, and drew a World Series half-share when the Yankees fell to Pittsburgh that October. Passed over in the 1961 draft after a year in the Pacific Coast League, Hadley revived his career in Japan, homering in his first Nippon Professional Baseball at-bat for the Nankai Hawks in 1962 — the first foreign player to do so — and helping Nankai win the 1964 Japan Series over six seasons through 1967.
