The players on this card

The 1960 Topps team card captured a Yankees club chasing history and nearly grabbing it. Under Casey Stengel, New York went 97-57 to win its 25th American League pennant, finishing eight games ahead of Baltimore. Roger Maris, acquired from Kansas City the previous December, batted .283 with a league-best 112 RBI to edge teammate Mickey Mantle for AL MVP; Mantle led the league outright in home runs (40), runs scored (119) and total bases. Bill Skowron added 91 RBI as New York advanced to face the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series. The Yankees outscored Pittsburgh 55-27 and won three games by lopsided scores, yet lost in seven when Bill Mazeroski's ninth-inning homer in Game 7 settled it. Five days later, ownership dismissed the 70-year-old Stengel, ending a 12-year Yankee run of ten pennants and seven championships.
