About Henry Mason
Henry "Pistol" Mason broke into pro ball in 1951 with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League, moving from shortstop to the mound in 1952, when he beat the Philadelphia Stars with a 16-inning complete game on Opening Day. After a two-year Navy hitch, he returned to start for the West squad in the 1954 East-West All-Star Game, earning the win. Signed by the Phillies that winter, Mason integrated the Schenectady Blue Jays in 1955 and turned in two standout Eastern League seasons, leading the circuit in shutouts and ranking among its strikeout leaders. He reached Philadelphia on September 12, 1958, becoming the Phillies' first Black pitcher, then made three more relief appearances in 1960 before closing his career with Buffalo and the Hawaii Islanders through 1962. His hard fastball earned him the nickname "Pistol." Card #331 in the 1960 Topps set, his only Topps issue, is a recognized rookie card capturing a pitcher whose two brief big-league stints followed a decade of Negro Leagues and high-minors success.
