About Harvey Kuenn

Harvey Kuenn broke into pro ball in 1952, signing with the Detroit Tigers as an amateur free agent out of the University of Wisconsin, where he'd been an All-American shortstop. After just 63 games in the low minors, he took over as Detroit's starting shortstop and, in his first full season of 1953, won the American League Rookie of the Year award by leading the majors with 209 hits and a rookie-record 167 singles. A line-drive hitter who sprayed the ball to all fields, Kuenn made ten All-Star selections between 1953 and 1960 and capped his Tigers run by winning the 1959 AL batting title at .353. That winter Detroit traded him to Cleveland for Rocky Colavito, a swap Indians fans still call "the Curse of Rocky Colavito." He went on to play for the Giants, Cubs and Phillies, finishing with 2,092 hits and a .303 career average. His 1960 Topps card, #330, catches him with the Tigers in the immediate aftermath of that batting crown, his final season in Detroit. Kuenn later managed his hometown Milwaukee Brewers to the 1982 pennant with a slugging club the city nicknamed "Harvey's Wallbangers."
