About Zack Monroe
Zack Monroe reached the major leagues as a right-handed pitcher for the New York Yankees in 1958, the payoff on a $40,000 bonus contract he signed out of Bradley University back in 1952, a path interrupted by military service before he resumed pitching in 1955. He threw a no-hitter for Binghamton in 1956 and won 16 games for the American Association champion Denver Bears in 1957, earning a call-up to New York the following June. Monroe debuted on June 27, 1958, with 3⅓ hitless relief innings, went 4-2 over 21 appearances that season, and threw a complete-game win over Boston that September. He pitched in Game 2 of the 1958 World Series as the Yankees rallied past Milwaukee for their 18th championship. Monroe made three more appearances for New York in 1959 before finishing his career in the minors through 1962. He is pictured with the Yankees on card #329 of the 1960 Topps set, issued the year after he earned his World Series ring.
