About Earl Battey
Earl Battey's 1960 Topps card (#328) captures him with the Chicago White Sox just weeks before a trade that transformed his career. On April 4, 1960, Chicago dealt the 25-year-old catcher and first baseman Don Mincher to the Washington Senators for slugger Roy Sievers, a swap the White Sox thought they'd won. Battey had signed with Chicago out of Jordan High School in Watts for $3,999 and spent five seasons mostly as Sherm Lollar's backup, riding the bench for the 1959 pennant-winning White Sox without a World Series at-bat. Freed from Lollar's shadow, Battey blossomed with the Senators/Twins into one of the American League's best all-around catchers, winning three straight Gold Gloves (1960-1962) and earning five All-Star selections. He caught more games than anyone in Twins history and helped Minnesota capture the 1965 AL pennant before falling to Sandy Koufax and the Dodgers in a seven-game World Series. A thyroid condition ended his playing days in 1967; he finished with a .270 average, 104 home runs and 449 RBIs. Battey died in 2003 and was posthumously inducted into the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame in 2004.
