1960 Topps #327 Ray Sadecki

About Ray Sadecki
Ray Sadecki's 1960 Topps card (#327) catches him just off his big-league debut — a $50,000-plus bonus signing out of Bishop Ward High School in Kansas City, Kansas, who skipped college for pro ball at seventeen and reached St. Louis by nineteen after stints with Winnipeg, Omaha, and Rochester. Called up in May 1960, the left-hander went 9-9 with a 3.78 ERA as a rookie starter, the season that makes this card one of the set's recognized rookies today. Sadecki blossomed in 1964, winning 20 games alongside Bob Gibson and Curt Simmons to carry St. Louis to its first pennant in eighteen years, then started twice in that October's World Series win over the Yankees. Known for his palmball, he was traded to San Francisco for Orlando Cepeda in 1966 and later pitched for the Mets, Braves, Royals, and Brewers, finishing with 135 career wins and 1,614 strikeouts across eighteen major-league seasons before his death in 2014.
