About Bob Clemente

Roberto Clemente Walker signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization out of Puerto Rico in 1952, but bonus-rule complications let Pittsburgh draft him after the 1954 season. He debuted in 1955 and spent his entire 18-year career in right field for the Pirates, playing with one of the strongest throwing arms in the game. This 1960 card catches him in the Pirates' World Series championship season, and the figurine batter pose set against the team logo makes it one of the prettiest cards in the set. Clemente went on to win four National League batting titles (1961, 1964, 1965, 1967), twelve consecutive Gold Gloves (1961-1972), the 1966 NL MVP award, and the 1971 World Series MVP. He finished with exactly 3,000 hits and a .317 career average. On December 31, 1972, he died in a plane crash while flying relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua; the Hall of Fame waived its waiting period and inducted him by special election in 1973, the first Latino and Caribbean player so honored.
