About Jim O'Toole
Jim O'Toole broke in with the Reds on September 26, 1958, tossing seven strong innings in a tough 2-1 loss to the world champion Milwaukee Braves — a debut sharp enough to earn the rookie left-hander a trip to advise the Yankees on The Ed Sullivan Show ahead of that fall's World Series. After struggling in 1959, he became a fixture of Fred Hutchinson's rotation, twice logging over 250 innings. His 1960 Topps card, #325, carries the set's first-year All-Star Rookie trophy, part of the inaugural ten-card subset honoring newcomers "selected by the youth of America." O'Toole anchored Cincinnati's 1961 pennant-winning "Ragamuffin Reds," going 19-9 with the league's second-best ERA (3.10), then started two World Series games against idol Whitey Ford, losing both close decisions. He made his only All-Star team in 1963, starting for the National League, and went 17-7 in 1964 as the Reds nearly caught the collapsing Phillies. A Golden Gloves boxer as a kid, O'Toole was nicknamed "Rocky" for his cocky, combative style on the mound. He finished 98-84 with 1,039 strikeouts over ten seasons with the Reds and White Sox, and the Reds inducted him into their team Hall of Fame in 1970.
