About Jim Perry
Card #324 is Jim Perry's rookie card, issued in the set's inaugural All-Star Rookie trophy subset (#316-325) honoring players "selected by the youth of America" as the top rookies of 1959. Perry had gone 12-10 with a 2.65 ERA for Cleveland that year after a wild spring debut led manager Joe Gordon to trust him in high-leverage relief, including four strikeouts over two innings against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Signed off the Campbell College campus by Cleveland scout Jim Gruzdis in 1956, Perry broke into the rotation in 1960 and tied for the American League lead with 18 wins, the first of five 17-win-or-better seasons in a 17-year career spent with the Indians, Twins, Tigers, and Athletics. Traded to Minnesota in 1963, he helped pitch the Twins to the 1965 pennant, won 20 games in 1969, and captured the 1970 AL Cy Young Award going 24-12. He and younger brother Gaylord Perry, a Hall of Famer and Cleveland teammate in 1974-75, remain the only brothers to each win a Cy Young Award. Perry finished with 215 career wins and three All-Star selections; he was inducted into the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame in 2011.
