About Johnny Romano
Johnny Romano broke into pro ball with the Chicago White Sox organization in 1954, setting an Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League record with 38 home runs at Class B Waterloo in 1955. Tutored by catcher-turned-manager Walker Cooper in the minors and skipper Al López in Chicago, he debuted with the White Sox in 1958 and backed up Sherm Lollar on the 1959 pennant-winning 'Go-Go' club, drawing a pinch-hit at-bat in that year's World Series. Traded to Cleveland that December, Romano took over behind the plate and, pictured on his 1960 Topps All-Star Rookie card in the trophy subset's debut season, was coming off a 16-homer year. He developed into a four-time All-Star, starting the 1961 All-Star Game and setting Indians single-season catcher records with 25 home runs and 81 RBIs in 1962. A fractured finger in 1963 sapped his power; he closed his ten-year career with Chicago and, in 1967, a pennant-winning St. Louis club. Nicknamed 'Honey' by an uncle, he retired with 129 homers and a .255 average.
