About Willie Tasby

Willie Tasby signed with the St. Louis Browns organization out of Oakland's McClymonds High School in 1950 and spent nearly a decade in the minors — capped by a Rookie of the Year, batting-title season at Triple-A Louisville in 1958 — before debuting with the Baltimore Orioles that September 9. Days later he helped preserve Hoyt Wilhelm's no-hitter. As Baltimore's starting center fielder in 1959 he hit .250 with 13 home runs and made Topps' inaugural All-Star Rookie team alongside Willie McCovey, the honor Topps marked with the trophy graphic debuting on his 1960 card — #322, part of the high-numbered #316-325 rookie subset, scarcer than the "selected by the youth of America" base cards around it. Traded to Boston in June 1960, he posted a career-best .281 average, then set career highs of 17 homers and 63 RBI for the 1961 expansion Senators before finishing with Cleveland in 1962-63. He picked up the nickname "Shoeless Willie" after pulling off his spikes during a lightning delay at Memorial Stadium in 1959, wary of the metal cleats. He died in 2022 at age 89.
