About Ron Fairly
Ron Fairly signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers out of USC for a $75,000 bonus in 1958, fresh off helping Rod Dedeaux's Trojans win the College World Series. He debuted with Los Angeles that September, and this 1960 Topps card, #321, one of the ten cards introducing the new All-Star Rookie trophy design, "selected by the youth of America," captures him as a young first baseman/outfielder building on his 1959 rookie season. Fairly went on to play 21 major league seasons, twelve of them with the Dodgers, and won three World Series titles (1959, 1963 and 1965), batting .379 with two home runs in the 1965 Series win over Minnesota. A patient left-handed hitter who logged over 1,000 games each in the infield and outfield, he made two All-Star teams, with Montreal in 1973 and Toronto in 1977, and finished with 1,913 hits, 215 home runs and 1,044 RBI over 2,442 games, the most homers in history by a player who never hit 20 in a single season. After retiring, Fairly spent nearly three decades as a color commentator for the Angels, Giants and Mariners.
