About Bob Allison
William Robert Allison, born July 11, 1934, in Raytown, Missouri, was a two-sport star at the University of Kansas before signing with Washington in 1955. After stops at Hagerstown, Charlotte and Chattanooga, he debuted with the Senators in September 1958, and his 1960 Topps card — issued as an All-Star Rookie trophy pick, the subset's first year — caps a big-bodied, 6-foot-3 rookie season worth capping: in 1959 he hit .261 with 30 home runs, 85 RBI and a league-leading 9 triples, earning an All-Star nod and the AL Rookie of the Year award. He anchored the Senators/Twins outfield for his entire 13-year career, pairing with Harmon Killebrew as "Mr. Downstairs" to Killebrew's "Mr. Upstairs" in one of the era's most feared power combos, hitting 256 career home runs and making three All-Star teams (1959, 1963, 1964). In Game 2 of the 1965 World Series he delivered a bases-loaded double off Sandy Koufax and a diving backhand catch on Jim Lefebvre still ranked among the best in Series history. He died in 1995 at age 60.
