About Joe Koppe
Joseph Koppe, born Joseph Kopchia on October 19, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan, reached the majors on August 9, 1958, with the Milwaukee Braves, appearing in 16 late-season games but missing the club's run to that year's National League pennant and World Series. A six-player trade sent him to the Philadelphia Phillies before 1959, and it was there Koppe had his true rookie season: 126 games, 113 at shortstop, a .261 average with 18 doubles, seven triples (eighth-most in the NL) and seven home runs. Topps commemorated the showing on his 1960 Topps card #319, part of the set's All-Star Rookie trophy subset (#316-325) — the first year Topps used the trophy graphic for the honor. A wrist injury limited him to 58 games in 1960, and after a 1961 trade carousel through the Dodgers and Cardinals, the Angels purchased him that June. Koppe closed his eight-year career as a steady defensive infielder with a .236 average, 19 homers and 141 RBI, then died September 27, 2006, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
