About Jim Baxes

Dimitrios Speros Baxes, a San Francisco native, spent a decade grinding through the minor leagues before finally reaching the majors in 1959 at age 30 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Playing mostly third base, he hit .303 in 11 games — including an April 15 home run off Bob Gibson in the future Hall of Famer's major-league debut. Released on cutdown day, Baxes was traded to Cleveland for $10,000 cash and a player on May 22, and became the Indians' everyday second and third baseman, batting .239 with 15 homers in 77 games. His season totals of 17 home runs and a .246 average earned him a spot on Topps' first All-Star Rookie team — honored on his 1960 card, #318, with the trophy graphic Topps introduced that year for the subset. It proved to be his only major-league season and his only Topps card; he was back in the minors by 1960 and out of organized baseball after 1961. Brother Mike Baxes also played in the majors.
