About Pumpsie Green
Elijah Jerry "Pumpsie" Green broke into pro ball with the Oakland Oaks organization after starring at Contra Costa College, then spent six seasons climbing the Red Sox farm system before his July 21, 1959 call-up. That day, entering as a pinch runner at Comiskey Park, he became the first Black player to appear for the Boston Red Sox, the last major-league club to integrate. A switch-hitting infielder, Green played four seasons in Boston (1959-62), his best in 1961 with career highs of six home runs, 27 RBI, and a .260 average. Traded to the Mets after 1962, he closed out a five-year career in 1963 with a .246 average, 196 hits, and 74 RBI over 344 games. His mother had nicknamed him "Pumpsie" in childhood, and it stuck for good. He later taught math and coached baseball at Berkeley High School for two decades. Card #317 captures his Boston rookie season as part of 1960 Topps' first-ever All-Star Rookie trophy subset (#316-325), a recognized rookie card for one of the game's true integration pioneers.
