About Leo Kiely
Leo Patrick Kiely was born November 30, 1929, in Hoboken, New Jersey, and signed with the Red Sox in 1948 out of CYO ball. The left-hander reached Boston in June 1951, winning his first big-league start, before Korean War service pulled him away. Stationed in Japan in 1953, he pitched for the Mainichi Orions of the Pacific League, going 6-0 with a 1.80 ERA — the first major leaguer to play in Japan, a mark that stood as the top foreign-rookie record there until 2005. Back with Boston from 1954-59, he settled into the bullpen and led the Red Sox with 12 saves in 1958, after a 1957 detour to the Pacific Coast League's San Francisco Seals, where 20 of his 21 wins came in relief, a league record. Teammates called him "Black Cat" for the toy feline he carried to the bullpen. This 1960 Topps card, #94, still pictures him in Boston flannels though he'd already been traded to Cleveland that January and on to Kansas City in April, closing his career at 26-27, 3.37.
