About Marty Keough
Marty Keough was one of the most expensive amateur signings in California history, inking a reported $100,000 bonus with the Boston Red Sox out of Pomona High School in 1952 after turning down offers from the Dodgers, White Sox and Pirates. The Sporting News nicknamed him "Meteoric Marty" that year for his blazing speed on the bases in Class C ball. Keough debuted with Boston in 1956 and, after stints in the minors, settled into the Red Sox outfield alongside Ted Williams and Jimmy Piersall by 1958, playing through the June 1960 trade that sent him to Cleveland — the season pictured on this card. He went on to play for Washington, Cincinnati, Atlanta and the Cubs, plus a season in Japan with the Nankai Hawks. His best year came with the 1961 expansion Senators (.249, 9 homers), and he hit a career-high .278 for Cincinnati in 1962. Keough finished with a .242 average, 434 hits and 43 homers over 841 games, then spent decades scouting for the Padres, Dodgers and Cardinals. He is the father of pitcher Matt Keough and brother of outfielder Joe Keough.
