1960 Topps #184 Gary Geiger

About Gary Geiger
Born in Sand Ridge, Illinois, and called Merle -- his middle name -- through high school, Geiger signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as a pitcher for $4,000 two days after graduating in 1954. Cleveland converted him to the outfield and took him in the December 1957 Rule 5 draft; he debuted with the Indians in 1958, then was traded to Boston that December, with Vic Wertz, for Jimmy Piersall. This 1960 Topps card catches him early in his Red Sox years, before a collapsed lung, a bleeding ulcer and a fractured hand interrupted his career. A fast left-handed hitter, Geiger set career highs in 1961 with 18 home runs, including one of only three inside-the-park grand slams ever hit at Fenway Park. Indians GM Frank Lane summed him up: "If God had given Gary a sound body, he might have been one of the best players in the league." He played 12 seasons for Cleveland, Boston, Atlanta and Houston, retiring with a .246 average, 77 homers and 283 RBI.
