About Billy Jurges
Card #220 catches Billy Jurges as skipper of the Boston Red Sox, part of Topps' 1960 manager subset. William Frederick Jurges broke in as a light-hitting, slick-fielding shortstop with the Chicago Cubs in 1931, anchoring Chicago's infield through National League pennants in 1932, 1935 and 1938. He survived being shot in his Chicago hotel room by a jilted girlfriend in July 1932 -- an episode later cited as inspiration for Bernard Malamud's novel The Natural -- and made three All-Star teams (1937, 1939, 1940) after a 1939 trade sent him to the New York Giants. He retired in 1947 with a .258 average over 17 seasons, then coached and managed in the minors before Boston hired him in July 1959. Jurges rallied the Red Sox to a fifth-place finish and presided over Pumpsie Green's promotion, integrating baseball's last all-white club, but a 1960 slump and illness ended his managerial career that June. He went 59-63 and later scouted for six organizations.
