About Cookie Lavagetto
Card #221 in the 1960 Topps manager subset (#212-227) pictures Harry "Cookie" Lavagetto atop the Washington Senators, a post he'd held since May 1957, when he replaced the fired Chuck Dressen. A part-time third baseman for the Pirates and Dodgers from 1934 to 1947, Lavagetto earned his nickname as an Oakland Oaks rookie signed by team boss Cookie DeVincenzi, and grew into a four-time NL All-Star (1938-41) with Brooklyn, batting a career-best .300 in 1939. He's remembered above all for one swing: pinch-hitting in Game 4 of the 1947 World Series, he broke up Yankees pitcher Bill Bevens' no-hit bid with two outs in the ninth, doubling home the tying and winning runs in a 3-2 Dodgers win forever known as "The Cookie Game." As a manager, Lavagetto guided the last-place Senators to three straight cellar finishes before a fifth-place turnaround in 1960 behind young talent like Harmon Killebrew, Jim Kaat, and Camilo Pascual, improvement that came too late to keep the franchise in Washington. When owner Calvin Griffith moved the club to Minnesota for 1961, Lavagetto became the first manager in Twins history, though he was let go that June with the club in ninth place.
