About John Romonosky
John Romonosky, the right-handed pitcher pictured on card #87 with the Washington Senators, was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1949 out of Harrisburg, Illinois, and spent thirteen seasons in the minors, including a stint with the Columbus Red Birds, with military service keeping him off any roster in 1951 and 1952. He reached the majors with the Cardinals in September 1953, starting two games, including a 3–3 tie against Milwaukee that was called after eight innings in his debut. He didn't return to the big leagues until July 1958, resurfacing with the Senators and working mostly out of the bullpen through 1959, when he posted a career-best 3.29 ERA. His last major-league moment came that September: pinch-running for slugger Roy Sievers, he scored the winning run in a 5–4 win over Cleveland. Across three seasons he went 3-4 with 63 strikeouts in 101⅓ innings. After baseball, Romonosky spent 34 years as a Franklin County, Ohio, deputy sheriff.
