About Harmon Killebrew
Harmon Killebrew signed with the Washington Senators for a $50,000 bonus out of Payette, Idaho, in June 1954, debuting in the majors six days before his 18th birthday. Bonus-baby rules kept him mostly buried on the bench and then shuttling to the minors before he finally won the third-base job in 1959, blasting 42 home runs and earning his first All-Star selection. This 1960 Topps card still shows him as the Senators' rising young slugger, a year before the franchise moved to Minnesota and became the Twins. Killebrew went on to lead the American League in home runs six times and RBIs three times, made 13 All-Star teams, and won the 1969 AL MVP Award after hitting 49 homers and driving in 140 runs. He reached 500 career homers in 1971 and finished with 573, then the fifth-highest total in major-league history. Sportswriters tagged him "Killer" by 1959 for the sheer distance of his blasts combined with the first five letters of his surname. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984, in his fourth year on the ballot.
