About Pedro Ramos

Pedro Ramos Guerra signed with the Washington Senators as a 17-year-old off his father's Pinar del Río tobacco farm, discovered by legendary scout Joe Cambria. After two brief minor-league stops, the hard-throwing right-hander reached Washington in 1955 and immediately became the club's workhorse, logging six straight 200-inning seasons. Ramos made the 1959 AL All-Star team but also led the league in losses four consecutive years (1958-61), a byproduct of pitching for perennial cellar-dwellers. On this 1960 Topps card he's still a Senator; he'd open the following year as the first-ever starting pitcher for the relocated Minnesota Twins, beating the Yankees and Whitey Ford in the franchise's debut. Known as "The Cuban Cowboy" for his lace-trimmed western wear and pistol-packing persona, Ramos surrendered one of Mickey Mantle's most famous near-homers in 1956 and started an all-Cuban triple play in 1960. Dealt to the Yankees in September 1964, he became a shutdown reliever down the pennant stretch, striking out 21 in 21 innings without a walk. Never enshrined in Cooperstown, he remained a fixture of Washington's pioneering wave of Cuban pitchers alongside Camilo Pascual.
