About Lenny Green
Leonard Charles Green grew up on Detroit's sandlots, remembered by scouts for running "like a deer," and signed with the St. Louis Browns chain out of Pershing High School before an Army hitch delayed his start. He climbed through Baltimore's system — batting .318 for Class A Columbus, starring for Pacific Coast League Vancouver — and debuted with the Orioles on August 25, 1957. Traded to Washington in May 1959 for reigning Rookie of the Year Albie Pearson, the left-handed-hitting outfielder found his footing under manager Cookie Lavagetto and became the Senators' regular center fielder in 1960, hitting .294 while prized most for his speed and glove. He held the job through the franchise's move to Minnesota, later manned center for the 1965 pennant-winning Red Sox, and closed his career with his hometown Tigers in 1968. Over 12 big-league seasons Green hit .267 with 47 homers, 253 RBIs and 78 stolen bases. His 1960 Topps card #99 shows him as Washington's everyday center fielder in the club's final season before the move to Minnesota.
