1960 Topps #100 Nellie Fox

About Nellie Fox
Jacob Nelson Fox — always “Nellie,” a nickname built from his middle name once he turned pro (as a boy in St. Thomas, Pennsylvania, he’d been “Pug”) — was signed by Connie Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics as a 16-year-old in 1944 after his mother wrote Mack asking for a look. He debuted with the A’s in 1947, but the October 1949 trade that sent him to the White Sox for catcher Joe Tipton made his career. Over 14 seasons in Chicago, the 5-foot-9 second baseman became the igniter of the “Go-Go” Sox: a 12-time All-Star, three-time Gold Glove winner (1957, 1959, 1960), and, gripping a bottle bat choked up, one of the hardest men in history to strike out — just 216 whiffs in 9,232 career at-bats. His 1959 season was his masterpiece: AL MVP, a .306 average, and the White Sox’s first pennant in 40 years, followed by a team-best .375 in a six-game World Series loss to the Dodgers. He finished his playing days with Houston in 1964-65, mentoring a young Joe Morgan, and entered the Hall of Fame via the Veterans Committee in 1997. His 1960 Topps run pairs the standard #100 issue with the short-printed high-number #555 Sport Magazine All-Star card.
