About Sammy White
Sammy White signed his first pro contract with the Pacific Coast League's Seattle Rainiers in 1949, and the Red Sox brought him to Fenway in 1951. He held down Boston's catching job from 1952 through 1959, a defensive standout whose pitch-framing needled Yankees skipper Casey Stengel, who grumbled that White "stole" strikes from umpires. A 1953 All-Star, he had his best year with the bat in 1954, batting .282 with 14 home runs and 75 RBI. On June 18, 1953, White scored three runs in the Red Sox's record 17-run inning against Detroit, a feat unmatched by any other 20th-century player, and in 1952 he'd beaten Satchel Paige with a walk-off grand slam. He caught Mel Parnell's 1956 no-hitter and, in 1955, broke up a Bob Feller no-hit bid with a seventh-inning single — Feller's record 12th career one-hitter. Traded to Cleveland that winter, White balked and sat out all of 1960, so his Red Sox card #203 pictures a player who never played that season. He closed his career with Milwaukee (1961) and Philadelphia (1962), a .262 hitter with 66 homers and 421 RBI.
