1960 Topps #204 Ryne Duren

About Ryne Duren
Rinold George "Ryne" Duren was born February 22, 1929, in Cazenovia, Wisconsin, and signed with the St. Louis Browns organization for a $500 bonus in January 1949. He spent eight years toiling through the low minors as a hard-throwing, wayward right-hander, his control worsened by vision so poor -- 20/70 in one eye, 20/200 in the other, the legacy of a 1945 bout with rheumatic fever -- that he wore thick "Coke-bottle" glasses for the rest of his career. Reshaped into a reliever under Denver manager Ralph Houk, Duren reached the Yankees in 1958 and turned his terrifying, sometimes 100-mph and wildly unpredictable fastball into a weapon, making the AL All-Star team and helping New York beat Milwaukee in the World Series, winning Game Six in relief. He returned to both 1959 All-Star Games, striking out Willie Mays and Eddie Mathews, and earned a fourth All-Star selection in 1961. His 1960 Topps card, #204, arrives on the heels of that 1.88-ERA career year and just months before he took the mound again in the Yankees' seven-game World Series loss to Pittsburgh. Alcoholism ended his playing days in 1965; Duren later became a nationally respected addiction counselor.
