About Andy Carey
Andy Carey debuted with the New York Yankees in 1952 after signing out of St. Mary's College for the largest bonus the club had ever paid, then won the starting third-base job in 1954, batting .302. Manager Casey Stengel needled him relentlessly — Carey later called himself "his scapegoat" — but he held the position through eight and a half pinstriped seasons, playing on Yankees teams that won World Series titles in 1956 and 1958. His glove was central to Game Five of the 1956 Series: he knocked down a Jackie Robinson liner to help start a putout at first in the second inning, then lunged to snag a low Gil Hodges drive in the eighth, preserving Don Larsen's perfect game. He led the American League with 11 triples in 1955. Traded to Kansas City just four games into the 1960 season, then on to the White Sox and Dodgers, Carey closed an 11-year career with a .260 average, 64 home runs and 741 hits. This 1960 Topps card, #196, is his final issue as a Yankee.
