About Lindy McDaniel
Lyndall Dale "Lindy" McDaniel broke into the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals on September 2, 1955, a $50,000 bonus baby out of Hollis, Oklahoma, and went on to pitch 21 major-league seasons for the Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals. He earned his nickname at age four, when family and neighbors began calling him "Lindy" in tribute to aviator Charles Lindbergh. After moving to the bullpen in 1959, McDaniel became one of his era's premier relievers, leading his league in saves three times. His signature season came in 1960, the year of this card, when he went 12-4 with a career-best 27 saves and a 2.09 ERA, earned his only All-Star selection, won The Sporting News' inaugural NL Fireman of the Year award, and finished third in Cy Young voting, becoming the first reliever ever to draw a Cy Young vote. He retired in 1975 with 141 wins, 174 saves and 1,361 strikeouts, then became a Church of Christ minister.
