About Solly Hemus

Solomon Joseph Hemus signed with the Cardinals organization in 1946 after four years as a Navy aviation ordnanceman in World War II, debuting with St. Louis in 1949. A scrappy 5-foot-9 shortstop, he won the leadoff job in 1951, led the NL with 105 runs scored the next year, and topped the league in being hit by pitches three times — hustle that earned him the nickname "Mighty Mouse" from St. Louis writer Bob Broeg. Owner August Busch, recalling an earlier thank-you letter from Hemus, named him player-manager in 1959, the last to hold that dual role in Cardinals history. A rough rookie season (71-83) gave way to a surprising 86-68, third-place finish in 1960 — the year of this card — built on Ernie Broglio's 21 wins and Lindy McDaniel's bullpen work. Friction with young stars Bob Gibson and Curt Flood cost him support, and he was fired in July 1961 at 33-41. He later coached the Mets and Indians before building a career in the Houston oil business.
