About Fred Hutchinson

Frederick Charles "Hutch" Hutchinson broke in at 19 with the 1938 Seattle Rainiers, going 25-7 and earning The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year award before the Detroit Tigers bought his contract. He pitched for Detroit in 1939-1940, lost four seasons to Navy service in World War II, then returned to win in double figures six straight years, peaking at 18 victories in 1947 and making the 1951 All-Star team; he finished 95-71 with a 3.73 ERA. Hutchinson became a player-manager for the Tigers in 1952-1953, then piloted the St. Louis Cardinals (1956-1958) before taking over Cincinnati in 1959 - the club shown on his 1960 Topps card #219, part of the manager subset (#212-227). He drove the Reds to the 1961 National League pennant, though they fell to the Yankees in the World Series. Diagnosed with lung cancer, Hutchinson managed through the 1964 season before his death that November at 45; the Reds retired his No. 1, and his brother founded the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in his memory.
