About Jerry Lynch
Gerald Thomas Lynch broke into pro ball with Class C Greenville in 1950, then reached the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1954 after leading the Class B Piedmont League in batting, slugging, hits, and RBI. Claimed by Cincinnati in the 1956 Rule 5 draft, he became the National League's most feared man off the bench, pictured here on his 1960 Topps card in the Reds' uniform. The following year he anchored Cincinnati's pennant-winning 1961 season, batting .315 with a pinch-hit, pennant-clinching two-run homer off the Cubs' Bob Anderson on September 26. Lynch finished his 13-year career (1954-1966, Pirates and Reds) with a then-record 18 pinch-hit home runs and 116 pinch hits, batting .277 with 115 homers overall. Pittsburgh broadcaster Jim Woods later nicknamed him "The Allison Park Sweeper" for his suburban home and machine-like precision at the plate. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1988.
