About Roy McMillan

Roy McMillan anchored the Cincinnati Reds' infield as the National League's premier defensive shortstop of the 1950s. A tryout-camp discovery out of Bonham, Texas — with just one pickup game of experience before Reds scout Hack Miller signed him in 1947 — McMillan reached the majors in 1951 and took over as starter in 1952, holding the job through 1960. He led NL shortstops in fielding percentage four times, won three straight Gold Gloves (1957-59), and made the All-Star team in 1956 and 1957. Voted the Reds' 1956 team MVP for his glovework alone despite hitting just three home runs, he formed one of the era's top double-play combinations with second baseman Johnny Temple and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in September 1957. Leo Durocher and Hall of Famer Pie Traynor both called him the finest defensive shortstop in the game, cementing the nickname "Mr. Shortstop." His 1960 Topps card, #45, captures his final Cincinnati season; that December the Reds traded him to Milwaukee for pitcher Joey Jay. McMillan later managed the Brewers and Mets and was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1971.
