About Eli Grba
Eli Grba grew up on Chicago's South Side, raised by his mother after his father left the family, and starred in three sports at Bowen High School before signing with the Boston Red Sox in 1952. He climbed the Red Sox chain — Salisbury, Corning, San Jose, and Triple-A San Francisco — before a March 1957 trade sent him to the Yankees. Two years of Army service delayed his major league debut until July 10, 1959. The right-hander went 6-4 with a 3.68 ERA for New York in 1960 and made that year's World Series roster, the same season captured on his Topps rookie card, #183 in the 1960 set. Left unprotected in the expansion draft that December, Grba became the first player ever selected in MLB expansion-draft history when the Angels took him on Casey Stengel's recommendation, then started the new franchise's first game on April 11, 1961, a complete-game win over Baltimore. He finished 28-33 with a 4.48 ERA over five seasons, then coached and scouted in the minors into the 1990s. He died in 2019 at 84.
