About Vic Wertz
Victor Woodrow Wertz was born February 9, 1925, in York, Pennsylvania, and signed with Detroit in 1942 before Army service in World War II delayed his path to the majors. He debuted with Detroit in 1947, hitting .288 as a rookie and becoming the first Tiger to hit for the cycle in his first season. The left-handed-hitting right fielder and first baseman played 17 American League seasons for the Tigers, Browns/Orioles, Indians, Red Sox, and Twins, batting .277 with 266 home runs and 1,178 RBIs across four All-Star selections (1949, 1951, 1952, 1957). His signature moment came in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series, when Willie Mays ran down his 450-foot drive to dead center at the Polo Grounds in "The Catch," one of the sport's most famous defensive plays. After contracting polio in August 1955, Wertz came back in 1956 to blast 32 homers and win the Comeback Player of the Year award. Traded to Boston in December 1958 for Jimmy Piersall, he was Boston's starting first baseman when this 1960 Topps card was issued, batting .282 with 19 home runs and 103 RBIs that year while leading American League pinch hitters with a .556 average.
