About Ted Lepcio
Thaddeus Stanley "Ted" Lepcio starred at Seton Hall, where his coach called him the best player he ever had, and signed with the Boston Red Sox for a reported $60,000 in 1951. He broke into the majors on Opening Day 1952, part of manager Lou Boudreau's rookie-heavy lineup, and spent parts of eight seasons in Boston as a versatile infielder at second, third, and short. On April 12, 1955, he became the first Red Sox player to homer twice on Opening Day, and his 1956 season — 15 home runs, nine of them in an 18-day stretch — was a career best. Off the field, he was a steadying presence for troubled roommate Jimmy Piersall during his 1952 breakdown. Traded to Detroit in 1959, then to Philadelphia that December, Lepcio wore Phillies pinstripes for his 1960 Topps card, hitting .227 with two homers in 69 games under new manager Gene Mauch before finishing his ten-year career with the White Sox and Twins.
