About Valmy Thomas

Valmy Thomas became, in 1957, the first player from the U.S. Virgin Islands to reach the major leagues in the post-integration era. Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, and raised on St. Croix, he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1951, then spent seasons in Canada's Provincial League and 13 winters with the Santurce Crabbers, helping the club to five Puerto Rican League titles and Caribbean Series appearances. Drafted by the New York Giants, the defense-minded catcher debuted April 16, 1957. With St. Croix having already proclaimed a Valmy Thomas Day, he asked fans to wait until he'd proven himself — then did, homering in the 15th inning to beat the rival Dodgers at the Polo Grounds. He started the Giants' first West Coast opener in 1958, then was dealt to the Phillies that winter. His 1960 Topps card (#167) catches him still with Philadelphia; he was sold to Baltimore that May and claimed by Cleveland in the Rule 5 draft that fall, closing a five-year, .230 career in 1961.
