About Chuck Essegian
Charles Abraham Essegian signed with the Sacramento Solons of the Pacific Coast League in 1953 and broke into the majors with the Phillies in 1958. A Stanford man, he played linebacker in the 1952 Rose Bowl, becoming only the second player, after Jackie Jensen, to appear in both a Rose Bowl and a World Series. Traded from the Cardinals to the Dodgers in June 1959, he became Los Angeles' go-to pinch-hitter down the stretch, batting .304 as the club won the pennant. That October he wrote himself into World Series lore, cracking two pinch-hit home runs off the White Sox — a mark later matched only by Bernie Carbo in 1975. Still a Dodger on this 1960 Topps card, his playing time shrank to 52 games before a trade sent him into the American League, where he bounced through Baltimore, Kansas City and Cleveland; his 1962 season with the Indians (.274, 21 homers) was his career best. He closed out in Japan with the Kintetsu Buffaloes in 1964, then became a Southern California attorney.
