About Frank Howard
Frank Howard signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1958 for a $108,000 bonus after starring in basketball and baseball at Ohio State, where he earned All-American honors in both sports and was drafted by the NBA's Philadelphia Warriors. The 6-foot-7 slugger tore through the minors, winning The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year, then took over right field from Carl Furillo in 1960 and won National League Rookie of the Year, batting .268 with 23 home runs. This 1960 Topps card, #132 in the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset, captures that breakout and ranks among the set's key rookies. Teammates dubbed him "Hondo" after the John Wayne film character. His Game 4 home run off Whitey Ford helped the Dodgers sweep the 1963 World Series. Traded to Washington in 1965, Howard became "the Capital Punisher," a four-time All-Star who led the American League in home runs in both 1968 and 1970, finishing with 382 career homers and 1,119 RBIs over 16 seasons.
