About Don Zimmer
Don Zimmer signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in 1949 and nearly died four years later: on July 7, 1953, a pitch fractured his skull in a Triple-A game at Columbus, and surgeons drilled three holes and inserted titanium buttons to relieve brain swelling during ten days of unconsciousness. He fought back to reach Brooklyn in 1954, backing up Pee Wee Reese at short and second for the 1955 World Series champion Dodgers and hitting 15 homers in just 88 games that year. He survived a second beaning in 1956 that broke his cheekbone, and picked up the nickname "Popeye" for arms and a jaw that recalled the cartoon sailor. His 1960 Topps card catches him in Los Angeles blue, though the Dodgers had already traded him to the Cubs that spring; Zimmer made the 1961 All-Star team in Chicago. He later became one of baseball's great lifers, managing the Padres, Red Sox, Rangers, and Cubs (1989 NL Manager of the Year) before coaching alongside Joe Torre on four Yankees title teams.
