About Jackie Brandt
Jackie Brandt signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as an amateur free agent before the 1953 season and reached the majors on April 21, 1956, before a trade sent him to the New York Giants two months later. His rookie season produced a .298 average, and in 1959, as the San Francisco Giants' regular left fielder, he won a Gold Glove. Traded to Baltimore that winter, Brandt is pictured on this 1960 Topps card in his first season as an Oriole — the start of his most productive stretch, capped by a 1961 All-Star selection as Baltimore's center fielder, with career highs of a .297 average, 153 hits and 73 RBI. Teammates called him "Flakey" — one said "things seem to flake off his mind and disappear" — and the nickname stuck so thoroughly that some have credited Brandt as the origin of baseball's "flake" slang for an eccentric player. Dealt to Philadelphia in 1965, he was the last man to bat against Sandy Koufax in a regular-season game, in Koufax's final season. Brandt closed his 11-year career with 1,020 hits, 112 home runs and a .262 average; he is not in the Hall of Fame.
