About Bennie Daniels
Bennie Daniels made an unforgettable debut: on September 24, 1957, the right-hander started the last game the Brooklyn Dodgers played at Ebbets Field, working seven innings in a 2-0 loss. Signed out of Compton High School by Pirates scout Rosie Gilhousen in 1951, Daniels spent four seasons with Pittsburgh (1957-1960), his sinking fastball offset by control trouble that bounced him between the rotation and the minors. On May 23, 1960, his single off Sandy Koufax was the only hit the Dodgers' ace allowed in a 1-0 Los Angeles win, denying Koufax what would have been the first of his five career no-hitters. Daniels was on Pittsburgh's roster when the Pirates won the 1960 World Series, then was traded to the expansion Washington Senators that December for Bobby Shantz. He broke out in 1961, leading Washington's staff in wins, innings and strikeouts, and started the 1962 Presidential Opener at DC Stadium, beating Detroit 4-1 as President Kennedy threw the first pitch. His 1960 Topps card (#91) catches him mid-Pirates tenure, the season the franchise finally broke through.
