1960 Topps #90 Bobby Avila

About Bobby Avila
Bobby Ávila, born Roberto Francisco Ávila González in Veracruz, Mexico, starred for Puebla of the Mexican League — batting .340 in 1946 and leading the circuit with a .347 average in 1947 — before the Cleveland Indians signed him for a $17,500 bonus in 1948. He debuted in the majors in 1949 and became Cleveland's regular second baseman in 1951, making three All-Star teams (1952, 1954, 1955) and becoming the first Mexican-born player selected to the Midsummer Classic. His finest season came in 1954: despite a broken thumb suffered on a Hank Bauer slide into second, he hit .341 to become the first Mexican-born batting champion in American League history, earned The Sporting News' AL Player of the Year award, and helped Cleveland win 111 games and the pennant, though the Indians were swept by the Giants in the World Series. In Mexico and Cuba he went by "Beto," the common shortening of Roberto that adorned his autographs and bats before he adopted "Bobby" in the U.S. His career wound down in 1959 with stops at Baltimore, Boston, and Milwaukee — the Braves club pictured on his 1960 Topps card #90 — closing out an 11-year run with a .281 average and 1,296 hits.
