About Juan Pizarro
Juan Ramón Pizarro Córdova signed with the Milwaukee Braves as an amateur free agent in 1956, scouted by fellow Puerto Rican Luis Olmo. After a dazzling 23-6, 1.77 ERA season with Class A Jacksonville — one that had Sally League president Bill Terry comparing him to Warren Spahn — the hard-throwing lefty debuted for Milwaukee on May 4, 1957, at age 20. This 1960 Topps card catches him in his final season as a Brave; he went 23-19 for Milwaukee from 1957-1960 and pitched in relief in both the 1957 and 1958 World Series, earning a champion's ring when the Braves beat the Yankees in seven games in '57. Traded to the Chicago White Sox that December, Pizarro blossomed into an ace, making the 1963 and 1964 All-Star teams and posting a career-best 19-9, 2.56 ERA in '64. He pitched 18 big-league seasons for nine clubs into 1974, finishing 131-105 with 1,522 strikeouts. Known lifelong as "Terín" — neighborhood kids likened the boy to the comic-strip hero of "Terry and the Pirates" — he was later inducted into the Puerto Rico Baseball Hall of Fame's inaugural 1991 class.
